So many of our youths come from broken homes and/or from parents who never finished high school or have little to no education beyond high school. And, this may be the source of our children’s despair: thinking that their parents’ fate may very well be their own or simply the fear of the unknown of untraveled paths. As a result, many do not aspire to be professionals because they just simply do not know what careers are out there. Still, there are many children who know the careers yet don’t aspire because they do not know where to begin the process or the steps entailed. Therefore, these children assume that they would be setting unattainable and unrealistic goals. But regardless of background, every child should have the opportunity to make their dream a reality.
We at BI Libraries believe that no career goal is or should be unattainable for the ambitious, hard worker. A family’s inexperience in post-secondary education planning should not be a barrier to a child’s dream, so we work diligently to remove any and all obstacles that he or she may face. Providing information for families and being available for consultation is how we serve, for we understand that information eradicates barriers. Our career planners have devised a 4-step career-exploration program that leads our students down their specific paths to success. At a minimum, our CEP program teaches our students the avenues to take in order to reach their destination, and it enables them to make informed decisions along the way.
