“Children need someone to disappoint.” In other words, children need someone who will hold them accountable, someone who will correct them when they are wrong—bottom line, someone who cares. When others hold that child accountable, it shows that child that others have confidence in his or her capabilities, talents, and potential along with concern for their well-being. Though being held accountable is a necessity for all children, it is actually a want for many. They need to know that someone is forever standing in their corner, always having their back. It is a basic necessity of a young child’s life. And though it may seem that a child is well-nourished by his or her surroundings, many take for granted the amount of attention that child actually receives.
BI Libraries makes a strong effort to be a pillar and fixture in the corner of our children. Strategically, we provide a relationship that combines positive reinforcement with a child’s longing for accountability through one-on-one and group activities and merit-based privileges. With testaments of success, we are able to stare boldly into the eyes of despair. We are able to see things in children that they cannot see in themselves, and we work tirelessly to bring it out of them. Like miners, we extract the gifts buried deep inside and bring them to full fruition. Once they see the power of mentoring manifested in their own lives, they will be more apt to fulfill their responsibility of returning the favor by being a blessing/mentor to the next generation.
